De feestdagen zijn voorbij en het is tijd om weer terug te gaan naar het leven van alle dag en vooruit te kijken op de rest van het jaar. De eerste Hebreeuwse maand na de feesten is Heshvan en het is de maand waarin we beginnen te bidden om regen, De bede om regen is niet alleen een zin die toegevoegd is aan onze dagelijkse gebeden, het brengt ons in een bepaalde houding. Een houding waarin we de hemel elke dag af turen naar regen en waarin we hopen dat Gods wil voor ons dit jaar overvloedig zal zijn en op ons druppels van zegen zal doen neerkomen. Het gaat bij er het water niet alleen om dat onze gewassen water krijgen, het herinnert ons eraan dat God voor ons zorgt.

En als ik nadenk over de maanden van dit nieuwe jaar, dan hoop ik dat de problemen waar we in Israel mee te maken hebben op een vreedzame wijze zullen worden opgelost. De Arabische wereld die ons omringt is meer dan ooit instabiel. De vlammen van opstand, vernietiging, dood en geweld omgeven ons. Maar anders dan bij bosbranden is er meer nodig dan regen om ze te doven. De onrust waar we elke dag getuige van zijn, zijn de producten van eeuwenoude conflicten die op een gevaarlijke manier aan de oppervlakte komen.

Als we opzien naar de hemel en om regen bidden, vragen we niet alleen om materieel succes, in de vorm van een goede oogst als gevolg van een goed regenseizoen. Maar Bijbels gesproken heeft de regen in Israel altijd gestaan voor Gods voorzienigheid. Hij waakt over ons. Hij heeft belangstelling voor ons leven. We bidden om regen, maar we bidden ook om vrede, om een oplossing voor de geweldige conficten, om een wereldwijde erkenning van Gods koninkrijk op aarde.

Ik hoop dat u wilt doorgaan om achter Israel te staan en blijft bidden voor Israel. Het is onmogelijk om te weten wat de komende maanden zullen brengen, maar we moeten alles doen wat in ons vermogen ligt om Israel te versterken, het land Israel en het volk Israel. En als we doen wat we kunnen, dan zal naar wij hopen, God onze inspanningen zegenen.

Moge God Israel zegenen met een wondervol regenseizoen en moge Hij u bedauwen met overvloedige zegen en een goed leven.
